OK. So the post from Gulf Shores didn't go as I suspected. The internet connection was strong but spotty. Gulf Shores SP in Alabama is enormous. over 400 sites, nearly all full with every variation on a trailer or motorhome you can imagine. They also have a fairly big tent city as well. I camped on a lake with a sign behind the T@B reading "Please do not feed or antagonize the alligators". OK! Deal!
Nice days but still not warm enough to get wet in the gulf. The beaches here are wonderful and there is good access to them. Seafood restaurants are everywhere and the two I tried were very good. It is so nice to eat fresh shrimp that is properly cooked! Evenings were in the low 40's and the light wind really made it seem much colder. Did some shopping and replenished everything so I'm ready to go back into the 'wild'.
Drove 377 miles to Manatee Springs on a cloudless day on very nice roads. The park is heavily wooded and the campground is unpaved (yay!) and all packed sand. (Ooo) Firewood is available and I'm looking forward to a fire tonight. This morning I biked to the spring and watched manatees and huge fish swim in the warm water. The spring is usually open for swimming but is closed for a couple months each winter so the manatees, being warm blooded mammals, have a protected place to hang out. Mullet, gar and enormous sturgeon are clearly visible as they swim in the crystal clear water. A short walk on an elevated boardwalk takes you to the Suwanee River (yes, the 'way down upon the' one) where there was a flock of buzzards sunning themselves as they roosted in the trees. One the way home I spied a couple of black hogs bashing through the underbrush. There were 3 does and a 4 point buck in my campsite when I arrived.
There is no WiFi, cell only works on voice if I hold the amplifier just so, no TV or radio so I listened to the State of the Union via satellite radio. The experience was a bit surreal as the surroundings I was in were pretty far removed from the lunacy in Washington. Tomorrow I will go to Cedar Key which is supposed to be even more removed from civilization.
I've had trouble uploading photos here but they have been going into a Faccebook album without any problem. You can look at them here:
