9/2/09 This has been an easy day. I am now running on solar power but I’m really gonna have to watch it closely. The fridge works pretty hard in the heat of the day so IM turning it down (warmer) to save some amps. Rode ALL OVER the playa today taking photos and getting mildly sunburned. I plan to ride to center camp tonight and walk around a lot because I’ll have a great case of “bike butt”. Tonight I’ll also start in on trash control and cleaning up some. I have more new neighbors again today. A solo guy form St. Louis passing through on his way to San Diego looking for work and a very conventional looking couple in a camper- conventional until they got set up and then dressed like Tarzan and Jane… I have identified a curious odor that accompanies the smell of cooking here: it is burnt playa dust! Not really offensive but unique in a burnt patchouli direction with a sweet/sour bouquet. Later: went and listened to music at center camp. An awesome violinist was playing against samples of himself making really interesting constructs and harmonies. Then went looking for camp “Nomadia”. The founder of the camp leads a “technomadic” life and started out in a T@B although he and his lady have moved on to another more substantial trailer. Found them just hanging out and had a very nice visit. I will be attending their seminar on nomadic life in America tomorrow and going to their party thereafter. They were blown away when I told them what I’d gone through to get here and that they were a big inspiration in my coming to BRC at all. Went back out on the playa and took some night video. Put my “shower” stuff together and actually got clean before bed. Sleeping weather is fantastic.
